The Museum’s Curatorial Department have produced a children’s illustrated booklet on Jimmy ‘Mac’ McCairns, a famous Second World War hero who flew from RAF Tangmere. Jimmy flew Spitfires in Douglas Bader’s Tangmere Wing until June 1941 when he was shot down and captured. He escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany and evaded capture. After being flown back from Gibraltar he joined No 161 Special Duties Squadron, becoming, in 1943, the most successful of the Lysander pick-up pilots with 25 successful missions.
The booklet is written and illustrated for children by David Coxon, the Museum’s Curator, and designed by Deputy Curator Pete Pitman. It is now on sale in the Museum’s shop, price £3.
