161 Next Generation Get-Together

July, 2016

On Sunday 17 July the Museum hosted a get-together of the families of three No 161 (Special Duties) Squadron Lysander pick-up pilots who served at RAF Tangmere during 1943, Hugh Verity, Jimmy ‘Mac’ McCairns and Peter Vaughan-Fowler.

The event enabled the Museum to thank the three families for their continued support and for the recent gift by Jimmy McCairns’ son Chris of a manuscript written by his father, now published and sold by the Museum as ‘Lysander Pilot – Secret Operations with 161 Squadron’.

The day included an excellent talk by the Museum’s Director, Dudley Hooley, on ‘Mac’ McCairns escape in 1942 from a prisoner-of-war camp in Eastern Germany and a conducted tour of the Museum by David Coxon, Curator.
