RAF100 Commemorative Baton At Tangmere

On Monday 16 April the Museum had great pleasure in hosting the RAF100 Baton Relay Team. At about 1000 hours, relay runners Flight Sergeant Jay Ferguson and Flying Officer Kurt Lee ran into the Museum’s car park with the commemorative baton after a 13 mile run from Princess Marina House in Rustington. Tangmere, like Rustington, was one of a hundred sites connected with the RAF selected for the relay.

The runners were greeted by Group Captain David Baron, the Museum’s Chairman and Dudley Hooley, Director of the Museum. Later in the morning the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, a former RAF officer, joined Museum volunteers and ex RAF pilots and ground engineers for the occasion. Mrs Pyper said, “It’s a very special day for all of us in West Sussex and I’m particularly pleased to welcome the baton to the military aviation museum here at Tangmere. It’s great to have the opportunity to celebrate 100 years since the founding of the Royal Air Force which continues to keep us safe today, as recent events have shown”.

During the afternoon the baton was taken for a ‘flight’ in the Museum’s Lightning cockpit flight simulator and was carried to the control tower on the airfield, one of the last remaining aerodrome buildings. Photographs for an album to remember this important event were also taken of our volunteers holding the baton.

The event was covered by the two local newspapers and by BBC Radio Sussex who broadcast live from the Museum throughout the morning.
